South St. Paul grew up around the Saint Paul Union Stockyards, founded in 1886, and by the mid-1900s Swift & Company and Armour Meats made it one of the country's largest livestock markets. The 1887 Stockyards Exchange Building on North Concord Street is still standing and has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979. The city's roots go back further still, to Kaposia, a Mdewakanton Dakota village relocated to the west bank of the Mississippi in 1837, in what is now South St. Paul. Today Kaposia Park and Simon's Ravine give the city one of its most scenic trail systems, and most of South St. Paul's roofs date from the housing boom of the 1940s through 1960s that followed the stockyard era.
