Short answer: for hail-prone Twin Cities blocks, steel and LP SmartSide carry the strongest written hail coverage, and James Hardie’s HZ5 fiber cement is built for freeze/thaw climates like ours. Vinyl is the lowest-cost option, but it gets stiffer and more crack-prone in deep cold, so insulated vinyl is the smarter vinyl for drafty homes.

Yes. The Twin Cities have recorded everything from −34°F to 108°F. Siding has to live through that swing, plus freeze/thaw cycles every spring and fall.
Example math: 150″ panel × 3.3×10⁻⁵ in/in/°F (typical vinyl spec, ASTM D696) × 115°F ≈ 0.57″. That’s why installers must hang vinyl loose, leave a ¼″ gap at trim (⅜″ below 40°F), and never nail it tight. Tight-nailed vinyl buckles in July and splits in January.
