Does Minnesota code require house wrap (a water-resistive barrier)?
Yes. The Minnesota Residential Code (Minn. R. 1309.0703, IRC section R703.2) requires a water-resistive barrier, such as one layer of No. 15 asphalt felt or another approved house wrap, over the studs or sheathing of all exterior walls.
What does that mean when siding is replaced after a storm?
When siding comes off, the wall behind it is exposed, and the Minnesota Department of Labor and Industry's re-siding fact sheet walks through what the 2020 code expects: the water-resistive barrier, laps of at least 2 inches horizontally and 6 inches at joints, and flashing at windows and doors. If the existing wrap is missing, torn or was never installed, that's part of what gets documented.
Is a permit needed to re-side a house in Minnesota?
Permit rules are set by each city. Many Twin Cities cities require one for re-siding. We pull permits where required and follow the code the inspector checks.
