Hastings sits along the Mississippi and Vermillion rivers in a part of Dakota County that sees somewhat fewer large hail days than the metro core, but still gets hit. NOAA storm reports show 1.25" hail near our Hastings job sites on July 9, 2020 — the largest we have on record here since 2015 — with 1" hail reported as recently as July 3, 2023. Trees and power lines were reported down near Hastings on August 15, 2025. Hail in the 1-inch range is often enough to bruise shingle mat and dent soft metals without any obvious sign from the ground.

Around Hastings
Hastings became the Dakota County seat in 1857, the same year it was incorporated as a city, after the county records moved from Kaposia and then Mendota. The city grew fast on steamboat and railroad trade along the Mississippi, and downtown still shows it: the East Second Street Commercial Historic District, on the National Register since 1978, is one of the most intact historic Main Streets in Minnesota. The Spiral Bridge that once carried traffic across the river near the north end of Sibley Street — not far from our job at 214 Sibley — opened in 1895 and stood until 1951. History runs deep here, from the Gothic-style William G. LeDuc estate finished in 1865 to Vermillion Falls, a 35-foot waterfall that once powered a gristmill and now anchors a downtown park. Our jobs range from that historic core out to the newer edges of town.
