Can brittle shingles be repaired?
Often not without causing more damage. As asphalt shingles age they lose flexibility, so lifting them to slide in a replacement can crack or tear the shingles around the repair.
How can you tell if shingles are brittle?
A brittleness check is simple: a roofer gently lifts a few tabs near the damaged area and watches what happens. Shingles that are still flexible bend and lay back down. Brittle shingles crease, crack across the tab, or tear at the nail line or seal strip. We photograph or video the test so the result is on record, not just an opinion.
Temperature matters. Every asphalt shingle gets stiffer in the cold, so in a Minnesota winter a fair test waits for a milder day or is done on a warmed area.
What makes Minnesota shingles brittle?
Age, heat cycling and sun break down the asphalt over time. In Minnesota, large temperature swings and repeated small hail can speed that up. Research from the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety has found that hail smaller than the 1-inch "severe" threshold can still age shingles over time.
What happens if a brittle roof is repaired anyway?
The repair itself can look fine while the shingles lifted around it are cracked or unsealed underneath. That often shows up later as blow-offs or leaks. That's why brittleness belongs in the documentation before any repair decision.
